Quikrete Bathroom Remodeling: The Cupertino Owner’s Guide

Quikrete bathroom remodeling in Cupertino typically runs $9,000-$28,000 installed, depending on scope, substrate condition, and whether you’re keeping the existing footprint or moving walls. We stock Quikrete-compatible shower pan mixes, floor mud, and waterproofing mortars, and we can usually get specialty blends from the San Jose distribution center within 24 hours. Most Cupertino homeowners first realize their Quikrete installation needs attention when they notice efflorescence blooming through grout lines or a shower pan that never quite dries between uses.

Which Quikrete Products This Applies To

Quikrete’s bathroom line breaks into three categories we regularly specify in Cupertino: Floor Mud (commercial-grade dry-pack mortar for shower pans, rated 5,000 psi), Sand/Topping Mix (3,000 psi, used for shower beds and leveling), and the newer Acrylic Mortar Repair for patch work on existing substrates. The Floor Mud is what you’ll find under most Monta Vista and Rancho Rinconada showers from the 2010s, and it’s identifiable by the gray bag with the red band and the “Commercial Grade” stamp.

The compatibility gotcha: Quikrete Floor Mud is not interchangeable with their Deck Mud, though the bags look nearly identical. Deck Mud is lighter (4,000 psi) and contains more lime, which makes it easier to screed but more porous over time. We’ve pulled out Deck Mud that builders substituted to save $4 a bag, and the pan had degraded within eight years. For OEM-spec work, we source Floor Mud directly; for repairs where the pan is still structurally sound, we sometimes use a modified Sand/Topping Mix with an additive, which we document in the change order if the homeowner approves.

Quikrete also makes a Pre-Pitched Shower Pan Liner system that pairs with their mortars. The liner is 40-mil PVC, and the critical spec is the dam corner radius: 3/4 inch minimum, or you’ll get pooling at the curb. We keep the liner and the dam corners on the truck; the mortar we mix on site because the working time is 90 minutes at 70 degrees, and Cupertino’s afternoon sun in July can cut that to 60.

Signs Your Quikrete Bathroom Installation Is Failing

Signs Your Quikrete Bathroom Installation Is Failing
  • Efflorescence on grout or tile edges. White crystalline deposits mean moisture is migrating through the mortar bed instead of draining to the weep holes. In Cupertino, this usually traces to a pan that was sloped at less than 1/4 inch per foot, or weep holes that got clogged with excess mortar during the original install.
  • Soft spots underfoot in the shower. The dry-pack has separated from the subfloor or degraded from prolonged saturation. Quikrete Floor Mud is designed to wick moisture to the liner, not hold it; if the liner was punctured or the preslope was skipped, the mud turns to damp sand.
  • Musty odor that returns after cleaning. This points to organic growth in the mortar bed itself, which happens when moisture sits for more than 48 hours. Cupertino’s mild winters slow evaporation, so a marginal install that might survive in Fresno fails here.
  • Cracks radiating from the drain. Thermal cycling between the heated floor and the concrete subfloor stresses the mortar. Quikrete’s standard Floor Mud has no polymer modification; without an additive, it can’t flex. We see this most in homes with original 1960s slab construction in the older Cupertino neighborhoods.
  • Tile lippage or hollow sounds when tapped. The thinset has debonded from the mortar bed, often because the Quikrete substrate was too absorbent (no primer) or too smooth (not scarified). The fix is removal back to sound material, not a skim coat over the failure.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Scope Cupertino Price Range
Shower pan rebuild (Quikrete Floor Mud, liner, drain assembly) $3,500-$8,500
Full bathroom remodel (gut to studs, Quikrete system, new fixtures) $9,000-$28,000
Small bathroom remodel (same footprint, standard fixtures) $5,000-$12,000
Walk-in shower installation (curbless, Quikrete preslope to finish) $4,500-$12,000
Tub-to-shower conversion (Quikrete pan, waterproofing, surround) $3,500-$10,000

What drives the range: access (first-floor slab vs. second-story with joist modification), whether the existing pan has a preslope (many don’t), and fixture grade. Our quotes are flat prices with line-item material costs, including the Quikrete product by name and quantity. Under Clause 1 of The Haven Standard, that written price is delivered before any work starts. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation; manufacturer’s warranty covers the Quikrete material itself.

What you can safely check: the drain strainer removal (hand-tight, usually), a visual inspection of the liner at the curb if you can access it, and the slope with a 4-foot level. What goes wrong fast: mixing Floor Mud to the wrong consistency (it should clump when squeezed, not flow), walking away during the cure (it needs 24 hours undisturbed), or missing the preslope entirely and bonding directly to a flat subfloor. The failure mode is invisible for months, then catastrophic.

We’re not affiliated with Quikrete; we’re an independent contractor that specifies their products when the job calls for them. We’ll bring a moisture meter, document what we find with photos, and give you a written scope before you decide.
