Which ViewLux Models This Applies To

The Pro-Grade and Permeable lines use a 60mm thickness with beveled edge lock; Classic used 50mm with a straight butt joint that shows failure differently.

To identify your series, check the edge of any lifted paver for the ViewLux stamp and date code, or measure a single unit: 4″ × 8″ × 2.36″ indicates Pro-Grade or Permeable, while 4″ × 8″ × 1.97″ indicates Classic. The Permeable line has additional 3/8″ spacer nibs cast into the sides for drainage gaps; these break off with freeze-thaw cycling in Cupertino’s occasional sub-32° nights, a compatibility gotcha that standard Pro-Grade replacements won’t solve.

Signs Your ViewLux Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

• Pooling water 48+ hours after rain. This indicates settlement of the bedding course or failure of the open-graded base in Permeable systems. In Cupertino’s clay-heavy soils near Stevens Creek, we see this where the original installer skipped the geotextile separation layer and fines migrated upward.
• Pavers rocking under foot or tire. Individual unit movement means the bedding sand has washed out or the edge restraint has failed. The cause is usually a missing or deteriorated concrete haunch along the perimeter; without it, lateral load pushes pavers outward.
• White efflorescence haze that returns after cleaning. This is calcium hydroxide migrating through the paver body, common in ViewLux Classic with its higher porosity. It signals the surface seal has degraded and water is saturating the unit, accelerating freeze-thaw damage.
• Sunken area near the garage apron or downspout outlet. Concentrated water flow has eroded the base material. In Cupertino’s older Monta Vista homes, we regularly see this where original downspouts were never tied to underground drainage and simply terminate onto the driveway surface.
• Joint sand completely missing between units. Polymeric sand breaks down after 5-7 years of UV exposure and vehicle loading. Once gone, water enters freely, the bedding course fluidizes, and the interlock mechanism that distributes load across multiple pavers is lost.

DIY or Call Us?

Where DIY goes wrong: excavating without locating utilities (Cupertino requires USA North 811 notification), compacting base material in lifts thicker than 6 inches (it won’t achieve 95% modified Proctor density and will settle within a year), or installing standard pavers where permeable is code-required for your lot’s impervious surface ratio.
