PGT Fence Installation: The Cupertino Owner’s Guide

PGT fence installation in Cupertino typically runs $3,500-$9,000 for a complete vinyl or aluminum system, with most residential projects falling in the $5,500-$7,500 range depending on linear footage and terrain. We stock PGT-compatible posts, rails, and hardware for same-day repair on most standard configurations. Most Cupertino homeowners first notice trouble when gate posts lean toward the street after winter rains soften the clay-heavy soil in the Monta Vista and Rancho Rinconada areas, or when picket panels start pulling away from rails that have lost their structural integrity.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT produces fence systems across several product lines, and the part you need depends on which generation you own. The PGT Classic Series, PGT Estate Series, and PGT Commercial Grade are the three primary residential lines found in Cupertino neighborhoods. Check the inside face of your end post for a stamped series marking, or measure your wall thickness: Classic uses .065-inch wall posts, Estate steps up to .080-inch, and Commercial Grade runs .100-inch with reinforced corner brackets.

The rail-to-post connection hardware differs materially between these lines. Classic Series uses a snap-lock bracket that PGT phased out in 2019; Estate and Commercial Grade share an updated through-bolt design that is backward-compatible with Classic posts but not vice versa. We carry both OEM PGT brackets and a quality aftermarket equivalent from Jerith that meets the same tensile spec at roughly 60% of the OEM cost. For gates over 48 inches wide, we spec the Commercial Grade hinge set regardless of your fence line, because the Santa Clara Valley wind load on a standard six-foot privacy gate will fatigue a lighter bracket in two to three seasons.

Signs Your PGT Fence Installation Is Failing

Signs Your PGT Fence Installation Is Failing
  • Gate drags or won’t latch. The post has settled or rotated in its footing, usually because the original installer used a 24-inch depth in Cupertino’s expansive clay soil rather than the 30-inch minimum we spec for this zone. The gate frame itself may be square, but the post it hangs from is not.
  • Rails pull out of posts. The internal bracket has cracked or the fastening screw has stripped its hole. PGT’s vinyl rails expand and contract significantly in direct summer sun; without a slip joint or expansion gap, the stress concentrates at the bracket.
  • Picket panels bow outward between posts. The bottom rail has lost its internal aluminum stiffener, or the rail-to-picket connection points have fatigued. This is common on south-facing runs in Cupertino where daily thermal cycling exceeds 40 degrees.
  • Post caps crack or discolor. Purely cosmetic, but the cap is your post’s water seal. Once moisture enters the hollow vinyl column, freeze-thaw cycles in the Santa Clara Valley’s occasional hard frost will split the post from the inside out.
  • Concrete footing heaves above grade. The footing was poured without proper drainage aggregate, or the post hole filled with native clay that holds water. In Cupertino’s winter-saturated hillside lots off Prospect Road, this shows up as a 1-2 inch lift by March.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a typical Cupertino residential lot, complete PGT fence installation runs $3,500-$9,000 installed. A single gate post replacement with proper footing starts around $650; rail section replacement runs $180-$340 per eight-foot span; full panel replacement with posts is $1,200-$2,800 depending on height and access.

Scope Price Range
Single post reset/replace $650-$1,100
Rail section (8 ft) $180-$340
Full panel with posts $1,200-$2,800
Complete fence, 150-200 linear ft $5,500-$9,000

What drives the range: terrain slope, access for our auger truck, whether we hit Caliche or decomposed granite below 18 inches, and whether your HOA requires a specific PGT color match. Every quote we deliver in Cupertino is a flat written price with line-item material costs, labor, and permit fees if your project crosses the 30-inch height trigger. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, that price is fixed; no change order moves forward unsigned, which is how we’ve kept 4,000-plus projects within a few percent of their original number since 2007.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a short list of what a Cupertino homeowner can safely check before calling. Confirm your gate hinges are tight with a socket set. Verify your latch striker hasn’t slipped on its adjustment slot. Walk the line and mark which posts move when you push them, so you can show us exactly where the structure has failed.

What we don’t recommend: resetting a post yourself. The footing for a six-foot vinyl privacy gate in Cupertino requires 30 inches of depth, 8 inches of drainage rock below the concrete, and a post-level hold during cure, all in soil that may be holding groundwater from the last storm. We’ve replaced enough homeowner footings that heaved within a season to know the cost of doing it twice. For the structural work, call (669) 202-9618 and we’ll schedule a free estimate with a written price before any work starts.
