Identification is straightforward if the original installer left the Schluter product label or lot number, typically printed on the membrane roll edge or KERDI-BOARD backer. Without labels, measure membrane thickness: DITRA is 1/8-inch nominal with the recognizable orange waffle grid; KERDI is a thinner 4-mil fleece-laminated sheet. The critical compatibility gotcha in Cupertino is batch-matching KERDI membrane to KERDI-FIX sealant - Schluter reformulated the fleece bonding layer in 2019, and older KERDI (pre-lot code starting with “K9”) requires the original KERDI-FIX formulation, not the current shelf stock. We verify lot codes before ordering.

Aftermarket uncoupling membranes exist at lower per-square-foot cost, but Schluter’s 10-year system warranty is void unless all components are Schluter-branded and installed per their handbook. • Tile tenting or popping loose from the substrate. DITRA was installed without full coverage of the anchoring fleece, or the plywood subfloor was OSB with excessive deflection - Schluter allows L/360 for ceramic, L/480 for natural stone, and many Cupertino tract-home additions from the 1970s don’t meet either spec without sistering joists.
• Musty odor from shower drain even when not in use. The KERDI-SHOWER drain bonding flange has separated from the membrane, allowing gray water into the mud bed. This is the most expensive Schluter failure to remediate because it requires pan removal and often subfloor replacement.
